OurO
Our modern way of life, for all its convenience and luxury, is dependant upon a level of resource consumption which isin short, unsustainable. Children are the future. If humankind is to make the vital steps towards a culture of balance, Children are living within the Earth’s limited resource bbasebase, then it is today’s children who are required to learn skills, perspectives and values which can create and sustain such a future.
Education For Sustainability’s E.F.S. has been running this programme under the umbrella of Transition Town Kinsale in local schools now since 2006 , our programme feeds into other programs (e.g. ‘Green Schools’) and into the existing curriciulum.
Our Emphasis will be on group work, with a fun attitute to engaging with natural materials. We encorage the involvement of other teaching staff and parents, in order to ensure the continued benefits of projects in the school grounds. This is of particular importance for the maintenance of a vegetable garden.
The central practical aspect of the program so far has been the creation and nurture of food gardens in each of the schools’ grounds. This is hands-on learning, creating a direct connection to the living soil which sustains every one of us. The children involved have built bmber-framed raised beds, mulched and tilled the soil, sown seeds, nurtured their plants, harvested produce and even feasted on their own vegetables. In one year over 100 Kinsale children experienced the entire cycle from seed to soil to stomach!
All our facillitators have at least one years experience working with schools in Kinsale. They are all graduates of the practical sustainability at the Kinsale Further Education College, have completed the green schools course and have diverse experiences, skills and knowledge to offer.
Education For Sustainability is being supported and part funded by Transition Town Kinsale. We are currently looking for a source of long term funding to make this programme sustainable. If you can help us in any way such as offering us us old tools to get fixed (we know some sustainble craftsmen), or if you would like to donate some money for funding or would like us to come and facillitate at your school.
