Locally grown food at a fair price

Kinsale Food Club is working with two local farmers to grow oats and potatoes using a new system of  food production known as Community Supported Agriculture (CSA).

These days farmers are mainly getting supported in the dairy and beef sector of farming. So it’s up to us the local community to support the farmer and encourage them to grow vegetables so that they are fresh and easily sourced for us. This creates a stronger link to our food and creates community resilience.

This a great idea, instead of buying and paying for our oats and spuds every week, we pay for it all in one go. Let’s put it this way €240 for a years supply is only approximately €8 a week for local spuds, and that is just for a full share. You could do a half share instead which is even cheaper / €4 per week. So if it’s local and organic it’s going to be fresher, we also use less carbon as we are not transporting from afar. We are also helping to strengthen the local economy..............................................continued

Allotments Update

E-mail Print PDF

Some excellent news just in on the Kinsale allotments front. A local
farmer is setting aside a field for allotments just outside Kinsale -
cross the 'new bridge' and it's the first entrance on the left after
the turn off for Sandycove.

If you are interested in renting a plot, call Mairead before Friday
11th April (after that date they will use any unused land for sowing
barley). Her number is: 087 6316625. I understand there is still
enough land for about 20 plots. Each plot is €100 for 11 months for 200m sq. which is an excellent deal.

From what I have heard, the land is good, though may need added
nutrition, is on a south facing slope and the farmer will be putting
in various facilities such as a water supply etc. It sounds like a
great opportunity.

In TTK's continuing search, after Cork County Council informed us that
they have no land available, the Sisters of Mercy on Compass Hill are

considering a recent request by us. Fingers crossed!
