Agenda for Transport Group meeting Tuesday 22nd September 7pm in Acton’s Foyer.
New ideas and how to progress with ideas below to be discussed:
One of the plans we have for 2010 is a car-free day (the Town Council support this idea). This could be coordinated with street events e.g. street ceili. With the guards we could organise two possible walking / cycling routes into town for the day we could also make it easier for people from the outlying villages to get into town without using their car – a shuttle (the landtrain?) , an avego type system, other ….we could target belgooly, riverstick, ballinaspittle and dunderrow…. a park n’ ride from an outlying field could also be put in place for charity.
Another suggestion has been to hold a cycle through town during the Copenhagen summit on Climate Change
Advocating for the implementation of the Kinsale Transportation study – prepare a short document highlighting the benefits to the town of the new one way systems and more pedestrian only areas.
Street map with names and old names – with stories attached….maybe a walking tour
1.Transition Town Kinsale submission re: Kinsale Transportation study 2.Car-pooling and congestion. Avego test site in UCC 3.Issues with parking and location of Public buses 4.Sculpture at town car park and its removal to a better location 5.A park n’ ride service to remove parking form centre of town so we can see the architecture etc. 6.Street map with names and old names – with stories attached. 7.EU Mobility Day car free – even on a few streets – street ceilli family cycle
Transport ideas from March 7th event
1.Start carpool list 2.Cycle group 3.Promote electric bikes 4.park n' ride 5.One way traffic system – better pathways 6.Improve local walkways e.g. Scilly walk and walk from Lower Cove to headland
Holland has pioneered a new project where Cars and pedestrians share the same space, they've removed street signs and traffic lights as they found drivers were getting over whelmed with visual stimuli. It has been such a success that similar schemes have started in other parts of the world. http://uk.cars.yahoo.com/drive-smart/article/261/
hello, i like bikes. But how do we encourage/promote bike use in Kinsale? It seems even the shortest distances are driven in cars around Kinsale. Maybe if we flattened out the hills? but seriously, Its a difficult thing to get people out of their cars. It might be interesting to do a survey to see how the people of kinsale use their cars and how willing they may be to only use them when necessary.
