I was wondering if any of you could answer some questions for me. Last year I started (or tried starting) to grow my own veg. I have little space so I'm limited to pots. The only success I had was with my sugar snap peas. I read somewhere that you could successfully grow carrots/parsnips in pots but they failed miserably. If any of you give me a few hints or tips on this matter i would really appreciate it!!!
Rhubarb from seed takes a while to germinate but I didn't find it any worse than other seeds - I only did it because I couldn't get to my wife's aunty to pinch a few bits of crown. Duff seeds and ones that sprout in odd ways can be dropped at an early stage but you have to wait a year to spot any poor performing runts for thinning. I have noticed flower stems this year but I just cut them off low down.
The Ballintubber guy at the farmers market was going to be growing sweet potatoes but he couldn't get seed. It would be worth asking him how he planned to do it.
sweet potatoes! wouldn't everyone love to grow sweet potatoes! I am thinking if we can do it anywhere in Ireland it would be in KINSALE! but under cover i'm thinking, has anyone ever tried. If we prepare now perhaps we can all try it next year and document the results... any thoughts?
Rhubarb, Rhubarb, Rhubarb, I have never grown rhubarb from seed but it seems that it is very difficult to get ones that don't bolt. My former boss told me that in the old days nurseries would keep hold of the plants for longer so as to identifiy and get rid of the bolters. But now they sell them on quicker and so we end up with bolting rhubarb. Does anyone with any experience of growing Rhubarb from seed have anything to add, helpful tips?
the Sisters of Mercy property committee say they will make a decision on granting 2 acres of land in Kinsale for allotments at the end of this month...maybe prayers are in order..
