Just In from Energy Bulletin

E-mail Print PDF

This just in from John Weber and his excellent site: Energy Bulletin.

Energy in the real world

by John Weber

Solar and Wind are not renewable. The energy from solar and from wind is available but not renewable. An oak tree is renewable. A horse is renewable. They reproduce themselves.

But, and a very important but, the human made equipment used to capture solar energy or wind energy is not renewable. In fact, there is considerable fossil fuel energy embedded in this equipment. The glazing on a solar collector of any kind – solar thermal water, solar thermal air, and solar electric – requires energy to manufacture. Aluminum comes from bauxite. It takes considerable energy to refine the bauxite. When I was fourteen, I worked loading trucks in an aluminum extrusion plant.

What is Transition Town Kinsale?

E-mail Print PDF

Transition Town Kinsale is a voluntary community initiative working to help make the transition from a dependency on fossil fuel to a low carbon future. Our Vision is a resilient, self-reliant and sustainable Town.

What began in Kinsale in 2005 has become something of a movement internationally. Rob Hopkins, teacher of Permaculture at Kinsale College of Further Education, produced the groundbreaking Kinsale Energy Descent Action Plan with his students, exploring ways in which the community could prepare for Peak Oil. One of his students, Louise Rooney, set about developing the Transition Towns concept resulting in the historic decision by Kinsale Town Council to adopt the plan and work towards energy independence. Rob moved to the UK where he established the UK's first Transition Town in Totnes which has become an inspiring focal point of the movement.

You can download the Energy Descent Plan from http://transitionculture.org/wp-content/uploads/kinsaleenergydescentactionplan.pdf

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
